Stephanie Chan
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Stephanie first studied voice with soprano
Nancy Zi. She then obtained her Bachelor of Music Degree from San Francisco
State University summa cum laude in 1982. She studied voice with sopranos
Jeanette Hill and Kathryn Harvey, and conducting with Dr. Byron McGilvray.
Stephanie returned to Hong Kong in 1983, where she has devoted most
of her time to teaching voice students and building up choirs. During
the time when Stephanie was Music Director (1983-1993), the choir of
St. Paul's Co-educational College has been chosen as the Best Secondary
School Choir in Hong Kong for ten consecutive years. In 1992, the choir
was given a Gold Award in the Third International Music Festival held
in Sydney, Australia.
During her appointment as Music Director of the Learners Chorus (1993-96),
Stephanie has planned and organized several concerts and musical performances.
The Learners Chorus also premiered many new compositions for the Hong
Kong composers, and was invited as a performing artist for the 1996
Hong Kong Art Festival. Stephanie has been in great demand as a speaker
for choral conducting courses and workshops. She is also often invited
as a guest conductor for concert performances. The choirs she has worked
with include the Hong Kong Children's Choir, the Hong Kong Music Institute,
the Northcote College of Education, the Hong Kong International Institute
of Music and the Chinese YMCA Mission Choir. Stephanie also served
as an adjudicator for the 47th and 48th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.
As a singer, Stephanie has given solo recitals and has taken part
in opera productions both in California and in Hong Kong. She is particularly
noted for her interpretation of Mozartian roles and German Lieder.
She is often invited to take the soprano solos of oratorios and sacred
cantatas and she is also a great favorite with the operettas and music
theatre.
Before settling in the Silicon Valley at the end of 1996, Stephanie
has been a Lecturer in Voice at the Chinese University of Hong Kong,
and the Head of General Musicianship at the Hong Kong Academy for the
Performing Arts. She is presently teaching voice and piano in Milpitas.
